Book in for our facilitated school program Then & Now: Rail in Queensland where students explore how our state's railways have changed over time.

Program overview

This facilitated school program explores how innovations such as the railways influenced the cultural landscape of early Queensland. Referencing the historical Ipswich region and the authentic site of the Ipswich Railway Workshops, students examine objects, images and stories, and explore the lives of convicts, miners, railway employees and museum workers from the early colonial period to the present.

Learning outcomes

Students will:

  • develop an understanding of the significance of the Ipswich Railway Workshops site and the local Ipswich region
  • engage in guided discussions about early settlement and the expansion, separation and the spread of peoples, making connections between historical, geographical, political, economic, and societal factors
  • observe, identify and interpret objects and sites to devise an inquiry and draw conclusions (e.g. about materials, histories, energy transfer, employment conditions, etc.)
  • recognise the influence of railways upon continuity and change in communities, past and present
  • use a range of sources to provide historical evidence.
