Wetlands are among the most important parts of our planet, rich in biodiversity and thrumming with life at scales both vast and microscopic. They are dynamic systems that undergo cycles of wetting and drying, and no two wetlands are the same. Even individual wetlands change from year to year, or throughout the seasons.
Wetlands make a vital contribution to human health and wellbeing, and they are of profound material and cultural importance to First Nations people, for whom wetlands are essential sources of water, food, medicine and tools, as well as story places and centres for cultural activity.
Visit this photographic exhibition and see a collection of images taken by Queensland Museum photographer Gary Cranitch, who took thousands of photos of wetlands across the state between 2019 and 2022 for Wetlands of Queensland, published by Queensland Museum in partnership with the Department of Environment and Science.
