On 1 July 2010, a new QR chapter began with the organisation being divided into two companies – Queensland Rail remaining government owned, and the national freight business, QR National, being privatised.
With the passing of the Railway Bill in 1863 and the opening of the first section of railway in 1865, to the sweeping changes of privatisation, Queensland’s railway has been the lifeblood of the state.
To mark the latest changes to rail in Queensland, QR staff selected ten momentous achievements in Queensland’s railway history, which were presented at the final annual QR Excellence Awards held in June 2010.
They provide a sense of the breadth and scale of the achievements and innovation of Queensland Rail over 145 years and its part in Queensland’s history.
