Get a sense of the story of rail in Queensland with this introductory exhibit in the foyer of the museum.

All Aboard as you begin your journey of discovery into the history of rail in Queensland as you enter the first exhibition at Queensland Museum Rail Workshops.

Things to see and do:

  • Discover the collection of railway items on the object wall – everything from rail signs, station scales, market lamps, an ambulance chest, cow catcher, boiler, wig wag signal, sewing machines and much more!
  • Learn about the A10 No.6 locomotive, the oldest working locomotive in Australia, built in 1865.
  • See carriage No.7 (built in 1866) which was manufactured in England and assembled at the Rockhampton Railway Workshops, and brake van No.52, built in 1884 in Maryborough.
  • Learn how to identify steam locomotives using the Queensland Railway classification system.
  • Sit and relax in the air-conditioned theatrette and watch the introductory Romance of Rail film.
