Senior Software Engineer in Renewable Energy Industry

Zulphia Burveen

Summary

I am working as the Senior Software Engineer, at Redback Technologies, an UQ Start Up venture. We provide solar and battery solutions, enabling every household and business to affordably generate their own renewable energy. As part of Luceo Energy, we provide real-time, fully configurable analytics for the energy network of tomorrow. I am responsible for above project's solution validation, building customized, cloud-based, energy data solutions, developing high-quality software design and architecture. To Identify, prioritize and execute tasks in the software development life cycle, Develop tools and applications by producing clean, efficient code, Quality Engineering, Automate tasks through appropriate tools, scripting and Ensure software is up-to-date with latest technologies.

Benefit

1.Neutral Integrity - Luceo Energy:  Winner, Best solution to an identified electrical safety issue for the year 2022. To solve the problem of providing early identification of neutral integrity faults, considering both instantaneous and historical time-series data, the algorithm can detect breaks in the neutral cable and degradation of the connection. The algorithm then calculates scores for the likelihood of different physical problems which may occur on the site, and notifies the operators in real-time of the event. The operator can review the event, confirm the analysis and issue service call to the site. The Luceo Low Voltage monitoring device and platform with Neutral Integrity services came online in August’2020. In the last year, the system has successfully detected and alerted operators of over 150 faults. The successful detections to date represent about .075 per cent of devices in the monitored areas being affected by a potentially life-threatening situation.

2.Redback Solar and Battery Solutions: Redback’s affordable renewable energy solutions such as Smart hybrid, Smart three phase, Smart Battery and Inverter systems , giving you peace of mind knowing that your home will power through any grid interruptions during storms, flood and blackout periods. Use the power stored in your home batteries to power key appliances, such as TVs, fridges, freezers and of course, Wi-Fi! When the grid goes down, the backup circuit will kick in automatically as long as you have solar or battery power available. Queensland is currently generating approximately 44% of its total energy just from solar, allowing everyday households to greatly benefit from the abundance of Australian sun, reducing their dependence on coal or other fossil fuels, which is a major win! Our twin Redback 3-Phase Smart Hybrid systems in Energy Solution Centre, based on the Gold Coast is a live example.

3.QLD Emergency Backstop Grid Safety Feature: Effective February 2023, All new and some replacement inverter energy systems (like rooftop solar PV), with aggregated capacity of 10 kilovolt amperes (kVA) and above are required to be fitted with a generation signalling device to allow the state’s network operators to switch these PV systems off, remotely, if needed. This is an important step in supporting Queensland’s transition to a more coordinated electricity system, as it will: allow more households and businesses to enjoy the benefits of rooftop solar in the future, help Queensland reach its 50% renewable energy target by 2030, support the uptake of technologies like battery storage and electric vehicles. This device enables Ergon Energy and Energex to reduce the risk of state-wide power outages by switching these systems off for a short time in an energy emergency situation.

4.Green Energy and Carbon Management:
New Zealand’s Electricity Distribution Businesses(EDBs) known as Distribution Network Service Providers(DNSPs) in Australia- are facing a variety of challenges in the transition to decarbonization, including investing in, managing, and operating their networks in a sustainable way. Luceo specializes in real-time management of data from diverse data-points which enables constant sensing and metering so EDBs can dynamically and flexibly balance the grid.

Role Model

I grew up in a small town in the southern part of India, where female children just going to school was a big deal. I was confined into my society’s structure that female children should not go out of the house and especially education is prohibited for them. I would say that’s a mini Afghan and I am a version of Malala Yousafzai! All those tough times, I made myself strong and consistent in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. My love for Science and Technology made me to excel and securing top marks in those subjects. My schoolteachers and principal were so supportive, and they convinced my parents to send for higher education. My passion continued there as well and I always shined as a class topper and graduated along with the Best Outstanding Student Award of my college. And scored university First class with Distinction. Kick starting my career after that was challenging and I have to leave my house against my parents, family and society. I found a very suitable position in a top MNC company. On seeing my transition, passion for career, my Parents, Siblings and Family started to be accepting it. They realized, education for Women is required and Women’s life is not meant to be end within the house and kitchen. After that, my families sent my cousins and niece for higher studies in various departments like Engineering, Healthcare and Science. Could you imagine, they event sent few of my cousins to abroad to perceive higher studies? I am so proud that I started this revolution from my home, family and relatives which is spreading across the society.
I never stopped after settling in my career, I keep running motivational speech sessions for women, lifting fellow women, emphasising mind, body, soul and self care, advocating women and children education especially in STEM. I took a career break after maternity for childcare and returning mom was not so welcomed in India at that time. I have to fight through those struggles (https://lnkd.in/gzZgiQmY ) and now I am uplifting and encouraging women who wants to resume their career and returning mom. I love empowering women as her energy can do a magic in the society.
After all the hard work, now I’m a senior software engineer in the world’s best country Australia. Continuing Women Empowerment in technology, mentoring and leadership in Australia and focussing in rural areas. My advice to women wanting to enter the tech industry is to learn new things daily and stay up-to-date with current technologies. The continuous renewal of knowledge will increase your confidence, abilities and will help us to achieve better. I would love to keep inspiring other women and prove there are no limits. When any woman says I couldn’t find time to do self-care or study or for anything else, I want to show them my life that I am a home maker, software engineer, yoga practitioner, dancer, speaker, blogger and social worker, there is no limits girl!

Engagement

1.As a college student, have conducted and participated National Service Schemes where visited rural areas and brought awareness to women education. 2.As a professional, Mentored women and girls in technological topics. As part of Outreach program in Cognizant Technology Solutions, Chennai, Helped Rural Government school students for preparing their public exams and entrance exams by consolidating all year’s question papers and answers. Had connect with Rural Government school students and discussed about the importance of education and career for women. I heard from them, they have no proper classrooms, and they study under sun and rain, No proper toilets. Those words from them are lingering in my ears and I should raise funds for their infrastructure.
3.Conducted Motivational Speech session for Women to effectively manage the Work-from-home come lockdown situations. As an active member of MarriedSuperWomen and Happymomshub, helped women in transitioning their career, finding job opportunities, resuming after career break,  provided techniques and solutions to overcome the parenting and working women problems.
4.Never missed to organize conferences, panel discussions for International Women’s Day emphasizing Gender Equal Future. This year, at Redback Technologies talked about equity and how  to create a fair and equal world moving forward (https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7039072072622374912?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop).
