Enhance your visit to Queensland Museum Tropics with our facilitated school program Your Shipwreck Adventure where students develop an understanding of maritime archaeology.

About the Program

Join our museum facilitators as they dive into the intriguing world of maritime archaeology leading students through object-based investigation of real and replica artefacts.

Your Shipwreck Adventure teaches students about what it means to be an archaeologist, the difference between artefacts and features, and encourages students to discuss why we choose to studying humans as well as learn the different between and how our interpretations of the past are shaped by our own lives.

Students will then pair up with a dive buddy to undertake their own maritime archaeological exploration of a shipwreck with a scavenger hunt and come back to their classmates to share their findings.

Learning outcomes

Students will:

  • know and use key terms and concepts relating to maritime archaeology, archaeology and museums
  • develop questions about archaeological objects relating to their materials, function and the people who made and used them
  • make observations, collect information and data about maritime archaeological objects to inform interpretations about their context and use
  • know the context in which maritime archaeological work occurs
  • understand the role of maritime archaeology in interpreting the past.
