From Dr Geraldine Mate, Head of Cultures & Histories:
"This vividly decorated glass vase, distinguished by its everted gilt rim, is a celebration of the natural world. One side features an emerging rose in full bloom, while the other centres on a brightly coloured, parrot-like bird. The surface is alive with detail: blue skies, yellow, green and blue foliage, delicate butterflies, and raised golden acorns that sit prominently atop the glass, adding texture and depth.
This vase is part of a special collection of around 800 precious objects assembled by Benjamin Ronalds, a skilled glazer who founded the Decorative Glass Company in Brisbane's West End around 1924. Although glass was his trade, his true passion lay in collecting fine glass and ceramics. Among the many objects in the Ronalds collection you will find Royal Worcester porcelain, pieces from British, European and Asian ceramics manufacturers, a wide range of glassware and a few selected pieces representing other applied arts."
