Roman oil lamp 1st Century C.E.

From Nicholas Hadnutt, Senior Curator Archaeology:
"This oil lamp was discovered during excavations in Cyprus sometime between 1882 and 1886. It was originally produced in the 1st Century C.E. in Italy and depicts a battle-ready gladiator, wearing a helmet, greaves, a protective gauntlet, a shield and wielding a small weapon in his left hand. The lamp may look like it is made from terracotta but don't let the orange colour fool you. An orange glaze has been applied to the clay to achieve this rich tone.

Before electricity allowed us to light up a room, a house, or even a city with the flick of a switch, candles and oil lamps provided light, giving people the opportunity to continue life throughout nighttime hours. Despite that, while this decorative lamp is functional, our specialists have determined that there are no signs that it has been used!"
